Microsoft has refreshed its smaller Surface devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. The Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch keep their compact designs while adding faster local processing, brighter displays, and higher starting prices. Both go on sale October 13 in select markets.
The announcement came at Snapdragon Summit. In its official announcement, Microsoft says the new models deliver up to 17 percent faster Office performance, more than 60 percent faster graphics, up to 18 percent better battery efficiency, and up to 95 percent faster local AI inference than the previous Snapdragon X Plus versions. Those figures come from Microsoft’s own tests and will vary by configuration and workload.
Surface Pro 12-inch gets 5G and a brighter screen
The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99 in the US, up from the previous model’s $799.99 starting price. Microsoft has also removed the 8GB memory option. New configurations start with 16GB or 24GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage.
The fanless 2-in-1 keeps its 12-inch, 2196 by 1464 touchscreen, but the display now reaches 500 nits, a 25 percent increase in brightness. Microsoft says the updated model adds about one hour of active web browsing. A 5G version will also be available for commercial customers, although cellular support can vary by market and carrier.
Microsoft is preinstalling its Ink Canvas app on the new Pro. The pen-focused app supports sketching, annotation, image generation, and text summaries. The company says it will also be available through the Microsoft Store for other supported Surface and Windows devices on October 13. Its AI features require an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription.
Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.99
The updated Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.99 in the US. It keeps the 13-inch 3:2 display and fanless design, with a 500-nit screen that is 25 percent brighter than the previous model. Microsoft lists up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, while active web browsing figures will depend on settings and usage.
Both computers retain two USB-C ports, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4. The Laptop also includes a USB-A port and a headphone jack. The new models come in black, platinum, and violet, though Microsoft says colors and configurations can vary by store and region.
What the upgrade means for buyers
The hardware change is useful for buyers who want a small Windows PC with more local processing headroom. Microsoft is pitching the Snapdragon X2 Plus as a way to run supported AI features with less reliance on cloud calls, but the company’s performance numbers are benchmark claims rather than independent results.
The higher prices also change the buying decision. The new Surface Pro is considerably more expensive than its predecessor, while the Laptop’s increase is smaller. Buyers who need cellular connectivity or pen input have clearer reasons to choose the Pro. For a conventional portable Windows PC, the Laptop offers the simpler design and longer quoted video-playback time.
Microsoft says both devices will be available from October 13 in select markets through its consumer and business channels. Regional pricing and the 5G configuration will depend on local availability.
