OpenAI Introduces Dots, Persistent Agents for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI announced Dots on September 29. The persistent AI agents run on GPT-6 Astra, with a dedicated cloud computer and browser, and can connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem.Users can message or call a Dot in ChatGPT, or message it in Slack and Microsoft Teams. OpenAI says Dots carry context across those channels and can continue working between conversations.

Who can use Dots

Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education, and Healthcare workspaces can try a beta when an administrator enables it. The first Dot is included with Pro and Business Premium plans.

Permissions and approval rules

Users choose which connected apps a Dot can access. OpenAI says its built-in rules determine when a Dot can act independently and when it must ask for approval. Users can add rules to allow, require approval for, or block specific actions. Sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, remain with the user.

OpenAI is starting with one Dot per user. The company says it plans to let users add more in the future.
